Lineage Holders of Inherent Truth

This article is the fifth in a series depicting the lives and attainments of those who have mastered and transmitted the essence of Buddhism, the profound way of the Great Perfection.

When the dharma king of Tibet, Trisong Detsen, was in his childhood he had an attendant named Tingdzin Zangpo. After serving the king for many years Tingdzin Zangpo renounced all worldly affairs and took ordination as a monk, devoting himself completely to religious practices. Due to his giftedness and diligence he was able to remain absorbed in meditative contemplation for seven years. During that time he developed the miraculous psychic ability to see Mount Meru and the surrounding four continents which are named: Surpassing the Body (in the east), Rose Apple (in the south) within which exists our planet Earth, Enjoyer of Cattle (to the west) and Unpleasant Sound (to the north).

Tingdzin Zangpo became one of the king's teachers and on one occasion said to him, "In the Indian city of Kapila the king Indrabodhi has five hundred scholars. You should invite one of them, one who is skilled in the path of the Vajrayana, to spread the teachings of the dharma in Tibet. " Following this advice, Vimalamitra was invited and during his stay he transmitted the complete Nying-t' hig cycle and the entire teachings of menag-de instructions, entailing direct introduction to the nature of mind, to both the king and Tingdzin Zangpo.

Once the dharma protector Dorje Legpa who had taken oath under Guru Rinpoche created a hail storm, directed it at a city in Eastern Tibet and made off with hundreds of camel loads of barley. Tingdzin Zangpo hurled his metal ritual vajra into the sky, commanding Dorje Legpa to remember the vows to protect the Dharma that he had taken with Guru Rinpoche. He then offered the barley to Tingdzin Zangpo, who used it to build the Zha temple in Uru. In the entrance pillar of the temple he concealed Great Perfection texts for the benefit of future generations. He gave the oral instructions of the Nying-t'hig teachings to his disciple Drochin Barwa, who in turn gave them to Be Lodro Wangchuk. Toward the end of his life, Tingdzin Zangpo meditated in a cave near Lhasa and there his mortal body transferred into a rainbow light body.
