We are pleased to announce that Lama Padma Gyatso will resume his detailed teaching on the profound and beautiful verses of Shantideva's The Way of the Bodhisattva, the Bodhicharyāvatāra, with the eighth chapter–Meditative Concentration. The first class will be Wednesday, 7:00pm PDT, May 3, 2023 and will continue twice a month on the first and third Wednesdays for four months.

The text itself outlines a complete spiritual path, from the moment of the first thought to discover what is most meaningful in this life to the final realization of profound wisdom. This particular chapter on meditation has become the wellspring for the bodhichitta mind training practices of equalizing and exchanging oneself for others (lojong tonglen), which increases our ability to feel and express greater compassion and loving kindness, as well as providing a sound basis to fathom the deeper teachings presented in the ninth chapter, Transcendent Wisdom.

If you have not attended the previous teachings (Chapters 1-7 & 10) or wish to review them, they are freely available in video format, with audio format available soon.

Lama Padma received these teachings directly from several enlightened gurus, especially Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche, Kalu Rinpoche and Dezhung Rinpoche. In particular, he received the transmission of the detailed commentary written by Kunzang Palden from Tulku Sang-ngag Rinpoche over several years. Kunzang Palden was a disciple of Paltrul Rinpoche and a teacher of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, from whom Sang-ngag Rinpoche received it. We are fortunate to be able to hear these teachings from Lama Padma who has studied, practiced and taught the Dharma for over fifty years.

We will continue using as the source text, The Way of the Bodhisattva, Padmakara Translation Group, Shambhala Publication Revised Edition 2006, which is available at Tibetan Treasures.

After concluding the teachings of this chapter, Lama Padma will lead a four-day residential retreat at Rigdzin Ling on the practice called Seven-points of Mind Training. This practice, which derives from the Indian master, Atisha, who brought these teachings to Tibet, is a further implementation of Shantideva’s meditation teachings.Save the dates: Friday-Monday, Sept 1-4, 2023.
